Do I need an alcohol server certificate to bartend?

It is different for every state.  The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission recommends that all servers complete an approved server training program.

What are the requirements to be certified?  Can someone with a DWI or felony conviction be certified?  What about if someone is under 18?

There are no additional requirements to be certified, minimum age requirement, or requirements regarding criminal history.  However, your record or age may be a factor in an employer's decision to hire you.

How do I get my certificate once I have completed the course?
You can either print out your certificate or request that it be sent to you.

What is the responsible server course?
The responsible server course teaches you how to serve alcohol responsibly. Some of the things you will learn are: how to spot a fake ID, how to tell when someone is intoxicated, how to cut someone off when they've had too much to drink, and the legal responsibilities of a server as well as your state's laws.

What are the benefits of taking a responsible serving® course?
Many states require bartenders to take this course. Some bars or restaurants may also require that you take a course that deals with responsible serving® in order to lower the bar or restaurant's insurance rates. Having this certification will also help you to stand out from other applicants when you apply for a position. The Bartender Mixology Course teaches you how to make drinks, customer service, bar terminology etc. This certificate will make you stand out from other applicants and help you find the bartending job you want.

Is this the same certification I can get from an in-classroom course?
Yes, our course will give you a nationally recognized certification that is comparable to what you would receive at a physical school.  The benefit of taking an online course is that you can work at your own pace, on your own time.

How do I take the quizzes or exams?
The quizzes and exams are all on your computer. The software will grade you and show your results on the screen so you know where you may need to improve. Your scores are also recorded in an online database.

If I fail the test, do I have to pay to take the course again?
No, you may retake the test as many times as you need to pass it without any additional fees.

How long does this course take?
The Responsible Serving® course takes approximately 2 hours to complete, depending on your past experience. You may work at your own pace and come back to the course at different times to finish it.

Do I need a home practice kit?
A kit is recommended for students new to bartending. It is a valuable tool for learning hands on how to mix and pour drinks. Our kits include bottles, glassware, and store 'n' pour containers, shaker, and jigger along with other important bartending tools. You can purchase one of our various kits on our Bartending Online school.
